The Basilica Ulpia and Trajan's Column

The Basilica Ulpia is the largest ever built in Rome. It had five naves, a marble floor, and two storeys held by granite and marble columns. Some still stand, of others only the bases can be seen. Behind the basilica was a courtyard, in the centre of which stands Trajan's Column. This is the only monument in the forum that has survived intact to this day. It was designed by Apollorodo of Damascus. It is 38 m high and consists of seventeen drums carved in a spiral with scenes from Trajan's war against the Dacians.
