The apparatus emitted radio signals over 2 km: Marconi replaced the Hertz vertical dipole with a vertical wire connected to a metal plate, with the opposite terminal connected to earth (Tesla antenna). On the receiver side he replaced the spark gap with a metal powder coil, a detector developed by Edouard Branly and other experimenters.
