The sacrifice of the Trojans

Fresco with decapitation scene, Fresco con escena de decapitación; depicted is Achilles' killing of the Trojan prisoners in honour of the memory of Patroclus. The ritual sacrifice is witnessed by Agamemnon (in Etruscan Achmernrun ) (the man on the left of the painting) and Patroclus himself in the form of a shadow (his evanescent state is indicated by the Etruscan inscription 'hinmal o hinthial Patrucles', i.e. 'the shadow of Patroclus'), Vanth (the Etruscan goddess of death, with multi-coloured wings), Charun (the blue-skinned Etruscan god of the dead, represented with a long hammer) and the two Ajaxes (Telamonius [in Etruscan Tlamunus] and Oileus [in Etruscan Vilatas]).
