Statues of Rahotep and Nofret

Statues of Rahotep and Nofret. Rahotep was a 4th dynasty prince, possibly the son of Snefru. This group was found at Meidum by Auguste Mariette. Both figures are seated. Rahotep has short hair and a moustache, wears a single thread necklace with a heart-shaped amulet and a white skirt. His skin is rendered in a reddish-brown colour generally used for men. Her name and titles are inscribed in black hieroglyphics on the back of her chair. Nofret wears a black wig with a floral motif headband around his head, a long toga and a tunic underneath. Around his neck is an elaborate necklace. Her skin is painted a creamy white generally used for women. Like her husband, her titles are inscribed in black hieroglyphics on her chair. The two statues both have set eyes. The white part of the eye is made of opaque quartz, the cornea of transparent rock crystal and the pupil of black impasto.
