Sarcophagus of Ahhotep

Only the lid remains of the sarcophagus. The lid is mummiform and depicts the deceased with her body wrapped in bird feathers (following the model of rishi sarcophagi, an Arabic word meaning feathered). The face is framed by a massive decorated wig. Its two ends descend to the chest and end in two large curls, in the centre of each of which is a blue core. Above the wig is the tail of a cobra, it has a necklace imitating cylindrical beads that ends on the abdomen with a motif of small drop pendants and on the shoulders with the heads of two hawks; superimposed on the necklace are a cobra and a vulture standing side by side with a single pair of outstretched wings; the remainder of the lid is decorated with a bird feather motif to indicate the wings of the goddess Isis enveloping and protecting the deceased; in the centre is a column of hieroglyphics bearing an offering formula; under the feet are depicted the goddesses Isis and Nephty kneeling in front of each other.
