Ippopotamo in earthenware

Faïence hippopotamus dating from the Second Intermediate Period and found within the necropolis of Dra Abu el Naga. Faience hippo figurines were often found in tombs from the Middle Kingdom onwards and were associated with female figurines symbolising fertility. Together they were meant to ensure the regeneration of the deceased. The decoration painted on the animal's body shows its natural habitat on the banks of the Nile, with aquatic plants, papyrus, lotus flowers and birds.
