Faïence hedgehog

Faïence hedgehog found in a necropolis in Thebes and dating from the Middle Kingdom. This animal was a constant presence in Egyptian reliefs and paintings and was used to decorate the bows of ships during the Old Kingdom. It represents a desert animal often associated with Mut and Bes, deities linked to birth. This is probably why many hedgehog-shaped amulets were placed in tombs.
