Polychrome mosaic with Orpheus

Mosaic in Alexandrian style belonging to the floor of the nave of the Eastern Basilica of Qsar Lybia, ancient Neapolis. It shows Orpheus, mythical poet and musician from Thrace, playing the lyre. Here he is depicted in the traditional manner, with the lyre leaning against a tree and a wild dog at his feet. Here he represents the personification of the messiah who with his music converts the Satyr and the panther, followers of Dionysus originally placed at his sides.
