Christian Warriors - detail of the apsidal mosaic

This lower part of the mosaic is particularly interesting as the artist, following the Renaissance tradition, portrayed the characters of his time, representing them with the most important saints. We find the 'Christian Warriors', representing the bulwark of peace and stable government. Starting from the far right we see, St. George of England; St. James of Spain portrayed by Giuseppe Garibaldi; St. Patrick of Ireland, portrayed by General Ulysses Grant, President of the United States in 1873. St. Patrick holds a white shield with a red cross, symbol of the Order of St. Patrick, and Ireland's national flag until 1783. St. Andrew of Scotland in a green tunic has the face of Abraham Lincoln and finally we find St. Denis of France portraying the soldier Longinus.
