Exterior of the Temple of Hathor and Nefertari (detail)

Partial side view of the façade of the rock temple dedicated to Hathor and Nefertari at Abu Simbel. The three colossi on the left side of the entrance gate are visible. Inserted in niches carved into the rock are the figures of Rameses II and Nefertari. The ruler is depicted in the side colossi, with the Double Crown on the left and the White Crown on the right. Nefertari, in the centre, is wearing the Hathoric Crown (with bovine horns and a sun disc surmounted by two tall feathers). Some of the couple's children are depicted on a smaller scale next to their parents' legs. The architrave and the sloping buttresses separating the colossi feature hieroglyphic inscriptions with the royal titles of the rulers.
