The Rekhmire Chapel

The long passage, or chapel, of the tomb measures more than 25 metres in length and proceeds inside the hill of Sheik Abd el Qurnah. The ceiling is three metres high at the entrance but as it proceeds it reaches eight metres. At the end, six metres above floor level, is a niche that once contained the statue of Rekhmire and his wife. At the bottom is a false door. Two shafts in the floor lead to the burial chamber. The chapel is decorated with scenes depicting the deceased supervising the gathering and preparation of food, craftsmen, carpenters, decorators, sculptors, etc. There are also scenes of the funeral procession and of Rekhmire with his family.
