Book of Doors: third division

Book of Doors, third division. On the left is the door with the serpent Djedby rising on its tail. First register Twelve deities in human form. In front of them stand twelve deities with jackal heads placed above two triangles symbolising a lake. Below them ten cobras stand above another lake. Second register: the sun boat is heading towards nine sarcophagi containing nine lying mummies painted black, these are the inhabitants of the Duat who are waiting for the boat to pass so they can be reborn. In the boat is a ram-headed god with a sun disc, representing the Sun god. This is the nocturnal form of the sun, a combination of Osiris and Ra. The god stands under a canopus protected by the great serpent Mehen, and holds a sceptre was. In front of him stands another serpent with protective functions. Also on the boat are the god Sia, in the bow, and the god Heka in the stern. The boat is pulled by four inhabitants of the Duat, the Dwawtyws. Twelve goddesses (two groups of six) are placed on two triangular ramps (these have a darker and a lighter side to symbolise darkness and light). The goddesses are the personification of the hours of the night. Between the two groups is a gigantic serpent representing time. Its coils represent each hour. The hours are generated and then devoured by the serpent. Third register: Horus with staff has nine deities in front of him who proceed towards a chapel inside which stands Osiris preceded by a cobra. Osiris is placed on a serpent. Behind the chapel are twelve gods. The last section shows four human-like figures each in front of a furnace where inside the enemies of Osiris are annihilated. The register ends with another figure looking towards the furnaces. The image shows a preliminary sketch drawn in red with corrections in black and the beginning of the relief.
