Book of the Day and Book of the Night

Ceiling of the burial chamber of Ramesses VI with representation of the Book of Day and Book of Night. The sky goddess Nut, depicted naked with outstretched arms and legs and her body decorated with stars devours the sun at sunset and then gives birth to it in the morning. Below her in different registers are scenes of the night and day journey of the sun boat accompanied by deities During its journey the boat encounters the dangerous serpent Apopi who aims to capsize the boat but is promptly annihilated. The Book of Night also features various groups of the dead, including the damned and blessed.
