Book of the Day and Book of the Night

Detail of the ceiling of the burial chamber of Ramesses IX. Double representation of Nut, goddess of the sky (her body is decorated with stars), depicted in the act of devouring the sun disc symbolising sunset. The sun will make its nocturnal journey through the body of the goddess and will then be born again at dawn. Left Book of Night: the solar boat makes its nocturnal journey with various deities. Right Book of Day: the sun god makes his journey during the day. He is depicted on his boat with a falcon text. There is also a sun disc and a winged scarab symbolising the day.
