Pilgrimage to Abydos (detail)

Scenes from the walls of the Funeral Chamber, detail of the pilgrimage of Sennefer and Meryt to Abydos, sacred city of Osiris. The decoration is divided into three registers. The upper register describes the outward journey, with the ritual papyrus boat pulled by a boat with rowers (right, only partially visible). On the ritual boat are Sennefer and Meryt, seated under a canopy. On the stern is a helmsman, on the prow an officiant who presents the couple with a table with offerings and performs libations. The lower register presents the scene of the return to Thebes, recognisable by the unfurled sails of the boat pulling the ritual boat (lost due to damage). Here there are four rowers, a pilot and a helmsman.
