Tutankhamun's sarcophagus and the decoration of the burial chamber

In the foreground is the quartzite sarcophagus containing the first of the pharaoh's three anthropoid sarcophagi, made of gilded wood. In the background the decoration of the west wall: the decorative scheme is taken from the Book of the Amduat. The upper register is occupied by the sun boat, with the sun god in the form of a scarab, Khepri, in the centre, preceded by five deities. The lower registers depict twelve baboons, symbolising the twelve hours of the night that the sun god (and the king) must pass through before being reborn at dawn.
