Ramesses III. Detail

Detail. Ramesses III and his son Amonherkhepshef are greeted by the goddess Isis, who holds up a hand in the direction of the king as a sign of greeting. The pharaoh wears the yellow bonnet headdress consisting, as its name suggests, of a sort of cap clinging to the skull and stopped at the forehead and back of the neck by a strip of fabric. The origin and meaning of this headdress, as well as the historical moment of its first appearance, are obscure.
