Sailing boat returning from Abydos (detail)

Detail of the pilgrimage scene to Abydos, sacred city of Osiris. Wooden boat with extremities and rudder decorated with a lotus flower motif. The boat has a decorated cabin and a mast on which the sail is unfurled (sailing is against the current, thus from Abydos towards Thebes), on the yardarm a sailor is climbing. In the cabin at the bow is the pilot, with a stick to measure the depth of the water; in front of the cabin are eight oarsmen and a sailor leaning over the edge of the boat towards the water; at the stern, standing, is a helmsman.
