Mouth opening ceremony

Detail of the Opening of the Mouth ceremony. The deceased is represented as a mummy and wearing a funerary mask, in front of him a priest with a skirt and a sash of fabric across his chest. The priest holds a small axe in his hand. This is placed near the face of the deceased and is used symbolically in the ritual to 'open' his mouth and eyes so that he can 'live' in the Afterlife.
