Xystòs-Portico delle Erme

The Portico of the Hermes constitutes a westward appendage of the Ptolemaion. It is the xystòs of the Gymnasium, i.e. a covered dromos whose façade is decorated with pillars bearing alternating herms of Hermes and Heracles, deities commonly known in the Greek world as protectors of gymnastics and gymnasiums. The covered track is approximately 12 m wide and a little over two-thirds of the length of the stadium (approximately 132 m). Today, the building is largely elevated along the entire track.
