Naval monument

The Naval Monument stands in the eastern area of the Platea Inferiore. It depicts the prow of a richly decorated warship placed within a rectangular paved basin, which in ancient times must have been covered with marly slabs and filled with water. The monument consists of a sculpture and a small prow, the front end of which is half-hidden by the figures of two dolphins, sculpted in high relief and symmetrically arranged on the two sides of the prow; their heads are turned towards the outer edges of the basin. The marble prow represents a naval trophy and forms the grandiose base for a richly draped female statue representing Athenae-Nike. It was erected to commemorate a naval victory by Ptolemy III Evergetes during the Third Syrian War.
