Ginnasio-Cesareo

The Caesarean Gymnasium, built in a phase of profound renovation of the Hellenistic city, occupied three interior blocks and its layout determined a regular layout of the area. Annexed to the Hellenistic Gymnasium was the Xystòs, a covered track for athletic exercises; the façade was decorated with the herms of Heracles and Hermes, the protectors of sport. The basilica building led to the elimination of the northern area of the Gymnasium in the second half of the 1st century AD and the transformation of the vast building into a forum.
