Doric fountain

The Doric fountain was supplied by springs from the Upper Terrace. The porticoed front faces north and is closed on the other three sides; it is elevated on a crepidine of three steps. The portico, punctuated by four columns between two wings with half-columns, gives access to a low basin carved into the floor of the ambulatory, while the baccino proper is bordered by an inner portico of three columns between half-columns. The two porticos, not aligned with each other, create the optical illusion of a larger space. The monument derives its architectural conformation directly from the older Fountain of Philothales.
