Pope Urban VIII is depicted half-length in a mozzetta and red velvet camauro with ermine edging. The image is constructed with fast painting and the composition is resolved in colour: bright red, white in its gradations, the background almost black. The light reveals splendid details. It was made for the frontispiece of a Pope's writings.
