Narcissus at the source

Narcissus is reflected in the water and falls in love with his reflection. Here the artist paints the moment before the discovery of the deception. The peculiarity of the depiction is the 'playing card' style, in which an upright upper image is matched by an identical lower one but reversed. The painting refers to a period in which Caravaggio drew on classical mythology.
