The Triumph of Divine Providence, detail

Created as an exaltation of the Barberini family, then ruling on the papal throne with Urban VIII, it shows through allegories its members becoming instruments of Divine Providence for the execution of divine will. The work is often cited as a manifesto of the new Baroque style in painting. Here we have five female figures (the three theological virtues and the personification of Rome and Glory) carrying in triumph the symbols of the Barberini family: the bees, the keys and the tiara.
