Senatorial Palace

Michelangelo preserved the walls of the old medieval building, but designed a new façade. His design was realised by Giacomo della Porta and Girolamo Rainaldi. The municipal tower was built by Martino Longhi the Elder from 1578 to 1582. The fountain was added by Sixtus V in 1588. It represents the goddesses of Rome. The sculptures on both sides depict the Nile and the Tiber.
