Castel and Ponte Sant'Angelo

Built by Emperor Hadrian in 130 B.C. as his own mausoleum, already used as a fortress in the Middle Ages, it became a papal residence during the Renaissance, also serving as a fortress and prison. It owes its name to the statue of the archangel Michael placed on top of the mausoleum by Pope Gregory the Great during an epidemic.
