The Marquise Casati is one of the most eccentric characters of the 20th century; desirous of becoming a work of art herself, she led a bizarre and unruly life, wearing very unusual clothes that gave her an exotic appearance. Several times she was the subject of Boldini's paintings. In this painting she is wearing a dress made of peacock feathers.
