Idol of the mother goddess

Strong physique, shapely legs and arms, often evoking the symbol of the egg, characterise most Maltese sculptures, so much so that those belonging to the later period have been referred to by scholars as the 'obese women'. Another feature common to most of them is the absence of breasts, which probably links them to the iconography of death goddesses and confirms their role in burial rituals.
