Sleeping Dea

Second version of Malta's 'sleeping goddess'. This time the female figure is on her stomach. Found in the funerary context of the hypogeum. Her figure tells us of the sacred function of sleep of the priestess incubating the prophetic dream and reminds us of the passage through sleep into darkness that belongs to the initiatory ceremonies of many traditions. Falling asleep in the belly of the Goddess to regenerate.
