Legend has it that in 210 B.C. the first emperor of unified China, Qin Shi Huang Di, stipulated that, upon his death, his body should be clothed in jade and immersed in a lake of mercury. This lake, inside a pyramid, was to be protected by an immortal army of eight thousand life-sized warriors, with a vanguard armed with crossbows, and behind them horses, chariots and the army proper. Rows and rows of soldiers, in battle formation on 38 columns, holding halberds and sharpened spears.
