Pompey's column: engraving

Pompey's column is located on a small hill, probably the ancient Rhakotis. The column is a monolith made of pink granite from Aswan. It was erected by Diocletian in 297 AD. At the top is a Corinthian granite capital commemorating the Roman emperor's victory over a revolt in Alexandria. The name is due to the Crusaders' belief that the column was erected by Caesar on the spot where he buried Pompey. Published in the Description de l'Égypte.
