Bust of Serapis in white marble

The god is represented with a kalathos on his head decorated with floral motifs and symbolising fertility. He wears a rich cloak, his hair is rendered with wavy locks also on his forehead and he has a rich beard. The cult of the god Serapis was very popular during the Ptolemaic and Greco-Roman periods together with the goddess Isis. He can be considered the iconographic combination of various cult currents representing abundance and resurrection. For this reason, Serapis can be seen as the Hellenistic outcome of the figure of the god Osiris.
