Sarcophagus

External stone sarcophagus of Prince Amonherkhepshef, the son of Pharaoh Ramesses III and, probably, the great royal wife Tyti, interred in the nearby tomb QV 52. The sarcophagus, with an anthropomorphic lid, is unfinished and it is in the last room of the tomb (Chamber F) instead of in the burial chamber (Chamber D). Recent research has shown that the prince was never interred in the tomb built for him, because a sarcophagus bearing the name of Amonherkhepshef was found in another tomb, that of an important official of the queen Tausert, chancellor Bay (the tomb KV13). However, the reasons for this change are still unclear and should perhaps be sought in the social changes that occurred towards the end of the reign of Ramesses III and that affected accordingly also the tombs of the Theban necropolis.
